If your dog may be seriously ill or injured
Phone your usual veterinary practice immediately—even when it is closed. Its recorded message or telephone service should direct you to the practice providing emergency cover. Do not delay the call while comparing facilities, and do not arrive without warning unless a veterinary professional tells you to do so.
24-hour hospital or out-of-hours clinic?
A 24-hour hospital is normally staffed continuously and may provide inpatient monitoring and advanced facilities. An out-of-hours service may operate from another practice during nights, weekends or bank holidays. Both can provide emergency care; the right destination depends on your location and your dog’s needs.
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons states that UK veterinary practices must make provision for 24-hour emergency first aid and pain relief. This does not mean every practice building remains open around the clock.

These links use current provider records and are safer than a copied list of hospital names and opening hours. Enter your town or postcode, then phone the selected service to confirm where to attend, when it is open and whether it can provide the care required.

Head & Paws does not rank or endorse individual practices. Coverage, staffing and opening arrangements can change; always confirm directly by telephone.
Prepare for the call
Give your name, location and telephone number; describe what happened, when it began and your dog’s current condition. Mention medicines, known health conditions, possible poisons or swallowed objects. Keep relevant packaging with you and ask about safe transport, likely arrival instructions and consultation charges.
This page is a signposting service, not veterinary triage. If you are unsure whether a problem is urgent, telephone a veterinary practice. Never give human medicine or try to make a dog vomit unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you.
